Project overview

3C Institute has partnered with UCF Restores to develop several online training programs for mental health professionals.

  • Trauma Management Therapy: Teaches participants the rationale and treatment components of TMT, an evidence-based treatment for those suffering from PTSD.
  • Virtual Reality Tool Training: Teaches participants how to conduct exposure therapy to treat PTSD using UCF Restores virtual reality tool approach.
  • Supporting Firefighter Mental Wellness: For clinicians who work or want to work with first responders, this course covers the specific clinical needs of firefighters.
  • Supporting Law Enforcement Mental Wellness: For clinicians who work or want to work with first responders, this course covers the specific clinical needs of law enforcement officers.

  • Working from scripts from the course writers, plan out the flow of video and interactive content with art notes
  • Developing storyboards and interactive exercises from art notes
  • Capturing and processing audio/video content for the on-screen narrator
  • Producing engaging animation, motion graphics, and graphics for interactive exercises
  • Developing Game UI and art for a practical application conversation game

Development process

Visual identity

The UCF Restores Team wanted to maintain their existing brand identity for these courses, but expand on the logo for each course. I developed a style-guide including new logos, existing colors and fonts, and expanded the color palette to allow for more variety in other graphics we would incorporate into the courses, such as icons and charts. This visual direction would be applied throughout all 4 courses.

Course graphics

After establishing the visual direction for the courses, the next stages were production of the course content including storyboards, motion graphics, live video, and interactive exercise templates.

The first 2 courses we developed for UCF Restores were built using 3C’s e-learning platform DeLP 1. In the years we worked on these courses, DeLP was upgraded to DeLP 2 which led to redesigning and rebuilding several elements of the course when UCF came to 3C wanting to upgrade to the new platform. Many of these upgrades were in redesigning the layouts of interactives to fit with the new responsive nature of DeLP 2.

Conversation game

For the Trauma Management Therapy course, the UCF team wanted to include an interactive exercise for users to practice exposure therapy scene construction. For this purpose, we developed a conversation game where the user plays at a therapist working with a client to create a detailed account of a traumatic event.

Style tests

Scene layout

A key element of the conversation game is the clock mechanic. As with real in-person sessions, the therapist needs to be mindful of the limited time of the sessions and use the time wisely to gather information that is necessary for the scene construction. If the user chooses questions that are not pertinent to the scene, then they lose time that was key for getting as detailed of an account as possible.

We needed to lay out the scene so the clock would be visible during the play-through.

Game UI

Illustration

After the game script was developed, I went through the story map to determine the expressions the client character would need to show during the conversation. I also determine when the scene would show a wide or close shot of the client and therapist characters.

Course UI/UX

How does the student access the course and it’s supplemental materials? The DeLP platform allows for flexibility in the user experience design of the course player.

Course resources

The courses also has several additional resources, such as module recap pdfs and certificates for CE credits.
